set up a one-turn-kill combo with

Doubling health from 8 to 16 then setting attack at 16 too sounds interesting, which combined with 15 damage does 31 damage...

He just suddenly died and I have no idea why.

It goes right to the victory animation which prevents me looking at the log to see what his last move was. Frustrating.

Does HS keep records of battles where I can go back and review this?

I can't see any of his cards to explain it...
