Similarly to his role as a collectible card, Edwin VanCleef is suited for playstyles that involve playing many cards at once. A good way to take advantage of Edwin's Hero Power is to buy minions that can summon tokens, like Alleycat and Murloc Tidehunter, so you can have some minions to sell in order to buy more—though make sure you save one coin in order to use Sharpen Blades. Edwin is best suited for building Mech or Demon boards, since they have durable high-statted minions, and then using Sharpen Blades frequently to make them even stronger.

It is also not uncommon to see Edwin VanCleef build murloc decks, where Sharpen Blades can give the murlocs a good boost in HP.
