This strategic card can be used to counter the deck known as Control Mage, whose win condition is dependent on flinging big spells at your face in a fun and interactive way. If your opponent is a Mage, and just Pyroblasted your face, then you need to play Kobold Monk now. However, because these kinds of decks make up less than half of the decks you face, over 50% of the time this card will only be a 4 mana 3/6.

To a lesser extent, Kobold Monk also counters Highlander Priest, in that their finishers sometimes use sudden burst from their Hero Power. However, they are also able to out-tempo a 4 mana 3/6 while holding on to their burn, so this is not as effective there.

It should be noted that Steady Shot, Mind Blast, Sinister Strike and similar effects, as well as random and AOE effects, don't directly target heroes and thus won't be blocked by Kobold Monk.
