Ban

A ban is the complete removal of a card from a constructed format.

In Hearthstone, bans are usually called for when a card is part of multiple formats, but is only excessively problematic in one of them. In play mode, cards are only banned from Wild or Twist formats, where nerfs are instead used as a priority for Standard format.

Cards may also be banned for a short amount of time due to game-breaking bugs or unintened interactions while developers can take their time to properly address the issues.

For longer periods of time, such as the entire month of a Twist format, or the entire Standard cycle of a card, cards are only banned in a way that they are playable in at least one of the main formats. Due to that, Wild-only cards are not banned from Wild, as they would thus be unplayable in any format on a regular basis, and as such can be nerfed instead. Twist generally does not have restrictions on what cards can be banned, since they might only be in the rotation for one month, after which they are automatically unbanned.

When a ban happens in play mode, players are allowed to disenchant banned cards for their full crafting cost, for a short period after the ban occurs. See Card_changes#Disenchanting.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • In play mode, a banned card cannot be placed into players' decks, and cannot be generated during the course of any game.
  • In Duels, cards can be banned from card buckets and deck-building, the former of which will also exclude it from all card generation.
  • In Arena, cards can be banned from the initial draft, but this does not affect card generation.[1]
