Lore[edit | edit source]

Warcraft Wiki icon.pngThis section uses content from the Warcraft Wiki.
The Lich King is the master and lord of the Scourge, which he rules telepathically from Icecrown Glacier atop the Frozen Throne.
Kil'jaeden the Deceiver created the Lich King from the spirit of the orc shaman Ner'zhul while Zovaal the Jailer forced the Runecarver (imprisoned Primus) who was forced against his will to do so by the Jailer to create both Frostmourne and Helm of Domination The Jailer intended to use the blade and the Helm to establish his influence on Azeroth, thereby allowing him to claim his "final prize", a secret that the First Ones sought to hide to raise an undead army to weaken Azeroth in preperation of the Burning Legion's invasion. Initially trapped within the Frozen Throne with  Frostmourne, the Lich King eventually betrayed Kil'jaeden and merged with the human  Arthas Menethil. At the climax of the war for Northrend, the Lich King was defeated by Highlord  Tirion Fordring and his champions. With the destruction of Frostmourne and the death of Arthas,  Bolvar Fordragon took up the mantle of the Lich King in order to keep the undead Scourge in check.
The Lich King Arthas was the titular antagonist of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The artwork for this card comes from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game "Icecrown" series, for the card The Lich King.
  • The Lich King is the only minion to also be a default hero.
    • Demon Hunter's default hero,  Illidan Stormrage, would've had a corresponding minion had it not been removed and replaced with  Xavius.
    • According to developers, the reason Illidan's minion had to be replaced, but not The Lich King's, is due to it being a "different situation", with the main reason being that The Lich King is not in Standard.[1]
      • Despite this, Xavius wasn't changed back into Illidan even after becoming a Wild-only card.
