A card that is Countered has no effect

Counter is an ability that causes the next card of a specified type played by the opponent to be removed from the game without taking effect.

Notes[edit | edit source]

Countered cards are removed from the game and cannot be returned with Resurrection effects.
Cards are countered before they enter play, and they will not activate on-play Triggered effects.
Counters will only activate when the card is directly played. Cast spell effects will not be interrupted.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

Counter has been a keyword since the game's first release. However, prior to Voyage to the Sunken City, it only appeared on the card Counterspell.
Oh My Yogg! and Ice Trap have effects that function similarly to a Counter, but do not use the keyword.
