Freeze is a mechanic that marks a minion or hero as Frozen. Frozen characters miss their next possible attack. After this, the Frozen status is removed.

Freeze only prevents attacking. Frozen heroes can take all other actions as usual, including using their Hero Power and equipping weapons. Frozen characters will also still defend themselves if attacked. Silencing a Frozen character will remove the Frozen status (unofficially called Unfrozen).

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • During your turn, if your character hasn't attacked at least once yet while it can (or hasn't used up its attacks) and is then Frozen, it will be Unfrozen at the end of your turn. This also applies to:
    • Minions with Rush, if the opponent has a minion to attack into at the end of turn, or characters with Charge.[1][2]
    • Characters that can attack multiple times (usually with Windfury or Mega-Windfury) but haven't used up all of their possible attacks yet[3]
    • Titan abilities (despite not being attacks in the traditional sense).
  • During your turn, if your character has attacked and then is Frozen, it will be Unfrozen at the end of your next turn. This also applies to:
    • Minions that have summoning sickness (just summoned or taken control of, can't attack yet)
    • Minions with Rush, if the opponent has no minions to attack into at the end of turn[4]
    • Characters that can attack multiple times (usually with Windfury or Mega-Windfury) and have used up all of their possible attacks already[4]
  • Can't attack effects and minions with 0 attack do not prevent them from being Unfrozen irregularry.
    • Example: You summon an  Ancient Watcher and Freeze it afterwards. At the end of your next turn, it will be Unfrozen.
    • Example: You summon an Ancient Watcher. During your next turn, you Freeze it. At the end of that turn, it will be Unfrozen.
  • Freeze cannot stop forced attacks ( Lothar's effect,  Illidari Inquisitor's effect,  Warmaul Challenger's Battlecry, etc).[5]
    • However, if they are forced to attack and then Frozen, they count as having used up their attack and cannot be Unfrozen until the end of turn where they didn't attack at all.[5]
  • If your hero is Frozen and you play a hero card, your hero will be Unfrozen.
  • During your turn, when you Freeze your Charge minion and the opponent does not have any minion, but their hero is Immune or has Stealth, at the end of your turn, that Frozen minion will not be unfrozen.
  • During your turn, when you Freeze your Rush minion and the opponent has only minions which are Immune or have Stealth, at the end of your turn, that Frozen minion will not be unfrozen.
  • During your turn, when you Freeze your minion that has both Charge and Rush and the opponent does not have any minions, at the end of your turn, that Frozen minion will be unfrozen.
